Transformation Friedrichstraße

The uninviting and unwelcoming state of Friedrichstraße has been evident for years, suffering as a result of ill-considered experiments. The crisis in inner-city retail is already severe and is made worse by too much asphalt, the dominance of parked cars and the untidy state of the area, not to mention the poor-quality remedial measures, such as the terrible bicycle and scooter parking facilities. Fundamental changes are needed to prevent the street from becoming a problem neighbourhood.

The 'Transformation Friedrichstraße' project is a short-term concept that uses the design of Berlin pavements to give more space to pedestrians and urban life. The aim is to create places where people can linger without feeling pressured to consume. No new designs are being created here; instead, the existing repertoire is being used to further develop the promenade. This approach could be adopted in many other desolate street spaces, improving quality of life, revitalising retail and gastronomy, and providing an important addition to street trees from a climate perspective.
