Segelflieger Quartier

Few new developments in Berlin have such an eventful history as the new Segelflieger Quartier in Berlin-Johannisthal. Bauwert is converting this former airfield and industrial site into an urban residential area with 1,800 apartments. The 'Amelie' block, which we designed, consists of seven buildings arranged around a large garden courtyard and set above a shared underground car park. The courtyard opens onto streets to the north-west and south-east, allowing cross ventilation and creating generous walkways. Large-crowned trees can grow in the centre of this garden around the playground. The rental and owner-occupied flats are designed to be architecturally uniform using yellow clinker brick and light-coloured render, while still creating easily identifiable addresses and impressive entrance lobbies. The building at the western tip of the site, facing the neighbourhood’s town square, features the ‘Stadtloggia’. In keeping with the site's unique urban context, it boasts a striking façade that makes a strong visual impact from a distance and engages in a dialogue with the listed aircraft hangar opposite.
